1) Romania’s Stunning Landscapes
From the snow-capped peaks of the Carpathian Mountains to the turquoise waters of the Danube Delta, Romania is a country of diverse and breathtaking landscapes. Hiking aficionados can find an abundance of trails within these mountains – some even leading to rare wildlife like lynxes and brown bears, so watch out!
Travelers seeking a more intense experience should take on the Transfăgărășan Highway, one of Europe’s most magnificent drives that winds its way through these mountains providing spectacular views throughout.
The Danube Delta, in my opinion, one of the best 30 places to visit in Romania, is another must-visit destination in Romania. It’s the second largest river delta in all of Europe teeming with over 300 species of birds such as pelicans, otters, and wild horses living amongst its channels and lagoons – making it perfect for nature lovers wanting to get away from urbanity.
Other captivating places worth exploring are the Turda Salt Mine which has been transformed into an amusement park situated underground, plus Retezat Mountains National Park offering beautiful turquoise lakes and cascading waterfalls that will leave you breathless!
2) Thrilling Adventures in the Outdoors
Romania’s stunning landscapes are not only beautiful to look at, but they also provide a wealth of opportunities for adventure and outdoor activities. With its rugged mountains, dense forests, and winding rivers, the country is a natural playground for adventure seekers.
Hiking is a popular activity in Romania, with a wide range of trails to suit all skill levels. The Carpathian Mountains offer some of the best hiking in the country, with trails leading to stunning vistas and hidden waterfalls. The Piatra Craiului National Park is another popular destination for hiking and trekking, offering challenging trails that reward hikers with breathtaking views.
Water sports enthusiasts will also find plenty to keep them busy in Romania. The Danube Delta is a popular spot for kayaking and canoeing, with its calm waters and picturesque channels providing the perfect backdrop for a leisurely paddle. The country’s many rivers also offer opportunities for white water rafting, while the Black Sea coast is a great spot for windsurfing and kiteboarding.
And for those seeking a more unconventional adventure, caving is a popular activity in Romania, with many fascinating cave systems waiting to be explored. The Scarisoara Cave, located in the Apuseni Mountains, is one of the most unique caves in the world, with a massive underground glacier that can be visited year-round.
3) Countless Hidden Gems
Despite its many attractions and unique features, Romania remains relatively undiscovered by international tourists. This means that countless hidden gems are waiting to be discovered, from charming small towns and villages to stunning natural wonders and cultural landmarks.
One of the advantages of visiting Romania is that you won’t have to contend with large crowds of tourists at popular attractions, allowing you to enjoy a more authentic and immersive travel experience. Instead, you’ll have the opportunity to explore lesser-known destinations and hidden gems that many visitors overlook.
For example, the painted monasteries of Bucovina are a UNESCO World Heritage Site that is not to be missed, with their stunning frescoes and unique architectural style. The fortified churches of Transylvania, such as the UNESCO-listed Biertan, are another hidden gem that offers a glimpse into the country’s rich history and culture.
But hidden gems can also be found in unexpected places, such as the vibrant street art scene in Bucharest, the quirky museums and galleries of Cluj-Napoca, or the idyllic countryside of Maramures.
4) Fascinating Past and Present
With centuries of stories to tell, Romania is a land steeped in history and culture. From the ancient Dacian Empire to the Ottoman rule that followed, it has been influenced by many civilizations over time. Today, you can explore its remarkable sites and museums for a glimpse into Romanian heritage both past and present.
One of Romania’s most iconic monuments is Bran Castle – better known as Dracula’s Castle! Based deep within Transylvania, this gothic fortress inspired Bram Stoker’s classic novel; drawing thousands of tourists every year who come seeking adventure.
Elsewhere in the country, you will find UNESCO World Heritage Sites such as Sighisoara, an impressive medieval walled city still standing today.
Romania also offers something for art lovers with incredible contemporary galleries showcasing works from local talents alongside international artists. The National Museum of Contemporary Art located in Bucharest should not be missed while street art around the capital has gained much recognition throughout Europe recently due to its creative flair!
5) Romania’s Warm Hospitality
One of the most striking things about Romania is the warm and welcoming nature of its people. From bustling cities to remote villages, you can be sure to be charmed by the country’s friendly locals and their genuine hospitality.
Romanians are proud of their cultural heritage and are eager to share it with you. Whether you’re sampling traditional cuisine, learning a folk dance, or attending a local festival, the people of Romania are always eager to help you experience their way of life.
Staying with a local family or in a guesthouse is a great way to experience Romania’s warm hospitality firsthand. Many guesthouses are family-run and offer guests a chance to experience life in a traditional Romanian household. Most of the time you will be treated like family and are often invited to participate in daily activities with them.
No matter where you go in Romania, you’re sure to be greeted with a warm smile and a friendly welcome.
6) Sun, Sand, and Seaside Fun
When most people think of Romania, they don’t immediately think of sandy beaches and sparkling seas. However, Romania is home to some of the most beautiful beaches in Europe, with crystal-clear waters and pristine sandy shores.
One of the most popular beach destinations in Romania is Mamaia, a lively resort town on the Black Sea coast. With miles of sandy beaches and plenty of water sports activities, Mamaia is the perfect place to soak up the sun and enjoy some seaside fun.
But Mamaia is just one of many beach destinations in Romania. The country’s 245 kilometers of coastline offer plenty of options for beach lovers, from secluded coves to bustling resorts. Some of the other top beach destinations in Romania include Vama Veche, Eforie Nord, and Costinesti.
7) Travel on a Budget
One of the biggest advantages of traveling to Romania is its affordability. Compared to other European destinations, Romania is a budget traveler’s dream, with affordable prices for everything from accommodation and transportation to food and activities.
Accommodation in Romania is particularly affordable, with options ranging from budget-friendly hostels to family-run guesthouses and traditional pensions. Food is also inexpensive, with delicious local cuisine available at prices that won’t break the bank.
Transportation in Romania is also very affordable, with a reliable train and bus system that connects the country’s major cities and towns. In addition, taxis and ride-sharing services are widely available and very affordable, making it easy to get around even if you don’t speak the language.
But perhaps the best part of traveling to Romania on a budget is that you don’t have to sacrifice quality for affordability. Despite its low prices, Romania offers a wealth of experiences that are sure to leave a lasting impression!
8) The Delicious Cuisine
Romanian cuisine is a varied mix of flavors that tell the story of its cultural roots. Hearty stews, grilled meats, sweet pastries, and decadent desserts – there’s something to please every taste in Romania.
One renowned dish from Romanian gastronomy is sarmale: minced pork and beef mixed with rice, and spices and wrapped inside cabbage or vine leaves before being cooked until succulent. Another favorite is mici – sausages made from an amalgamation of lamb, beef, and pork grilled to perfection.
But vegetarians can also find plenty to enjoy as well. Zacusca for example is a dip concocted out of roasted eggplant & peppers; fasole batuta- mashed beans blended with aromatic herbs are just some vegan options they may relish.
And for those who like their treats on the sweeter side- cozonac (a bread crammed full with nuts & dried fruit) or papanasi (donuts served alongside sour cream & jam) will certainly hit the spot!
9) Rich Drinking Culture
In addition to its delicious cuisine, Romania is also known for its rich drinking culture. From beer to wine to traditional spirits, there’s no shortage of options to quench your thirst in Romania.
Beer has a long history in Romania, with the first brewery opening in the country in 1718. Today, Romania is home to many microbreweries and craft beer bars, offering a wide range of styles and flavors. Some popular Romanian beers include Ursus, Ciuc, and Timișoreana.
Wine production is also a longstanding tradition in Romania, with vineyards dating back to ancient times. Romanian wine is known for its variety and quality, with over 100 unique grape varieties grown across the country. Some popular Romanian wines include Feteasca Neagra, a full-bodied red wine, and Grasa de Cotnari, a sweet white wine.
For those looking for something stronger, traditional Romanian spirits like țuică and palinca are a must-try. These fruit brandies are made from plums, apples, or other fruits, and are typically enjoyed as a digestive after a meal.
10) Thermal Baths and Spas
If you’re looking for a relaxing getaway, Romania’s thermal baths and spas are the perfect destination. With over 1,300 natural springs across the country, Romania is one of Europe’s top destinations for thermal and mineral waters.
One of the most popular thermal baths in Romania is the Baile Felix resort, located in the western part of the country. With over 15 natural springs and a wide range of facilities, including indoor and outdoor pools, saunas, and massage services, Baile Felix is the perfect place to unwind and rejuvenate.
Another popular destination is the town of Băile Herculane, known for its natural thermal springs and stunning mountain scenery. The town has been a popular spa destination since ancient Roman times and has a rich history and culture surrounding its healing waters.
And for those looking for a more secluded and natural experience, the thermal baths at Vama Buzaului offer a unique and peaceful setting. Surrounded by mountains and forests, the baths offer a tranquil escape from the hustle and bustle of daily life.
Conclusion
Romania is truly a hidden gem in Europe, offering a wealth of natural wonders, exciting outdoor activities, rich history and culture, warm hospitality, and much more. Despite all that it has to offer, Romania remains underrated and often overlooked as a travel destination.

It’s crazy that so many countries that were behind the ‘iron curtain’ are still under the international travellers’ radar. I’m sure that Romania has lots of great – albeit recently not so great… – history and most of all, amazing landscapes. Maybe I could just start with a city break in Bukarest and take it from there. I’d be very interested in visiting the Carpathian Mountains.
